We are looking for a Business Development Head to join Baseimmune team and support our growth. At Baseimmune, we are mediating meaningful impact on the health of people worldwide with novel technologies to revolutionise vaccine design and build mutation-proof vaccines.

The candidate will be the first hire in the Business Development team to support both internal and partner-facing business development with the aim to identify new business opportunities and establish long term partnerships.

Who are we

Baseimmune is a seed-stage biotechnology start-up working on data-driven methods for antigen design and vaccine development. Founded by a team from the Jenner Institute in Oxford that has previously developed over 15 vaccines, Baseimmune uses computational methods to design the next generation of future-proof vaccines by predicting mutations before they happen. 

Our pipeline includes vaccines targeting human and veterinary pathogens. In addition, we have a number of collaborations with world leading institutes such as Imperial College London and Touchlight. 

You’ll be joining a team of scientists and software developers located in the Kings Cross area in London. The position provides the opportunity to work with an innovative biotech company at the start of its journey with the potential to have a real impact. We are backed by leading investors from Europe and US with £4.2m raised in our seed stage.

Overview of the Role

This position is fundamental to the business’ success in the coming years and is specifically designed to enable the successful candidate to grow their career as the organisation grows and enters new markets. 

Reporting to the C-suite, you will form part of the Leadership Team, being a hands-on leader that takes responsibility for the multitude of business challenges faced by a rapidly growing, seed-funded biotech company.

Required Experience

  • Understanding of the biotechnology industry and its applications
  • Strong business accum to identify commercial opportunities and strategic partnership to drive company growth
  • Proven Business Development track record is required, with drive to pitch, negotiate, and close new deals and business opportunities
  • Preferred previous experience within a rapidly scaling start up
  • Previous experience in creating and leading a team

  • Ability to accurately digest complex ideas and needs, and then to synthesize into clear actions & goals
  • Ability to build and maintain strong business relationships – both in person and remotely
  • Ability to visualize a big picture to be broken into executable pieces
  • Self-starter mentality. You will build and lead the Business Development efforts with the founders.
  • Ability to problem solve to resolve hurdles and identify patterns to inform process 
  • Collaborative approach with strong communication skills to work within a hybrid work setting

Responsibilities of the role

  • Drive analysis of strategic landscape, gather industry intelligence and incorporate into short- and long-term growth strategy
  • Work closely with alliance management to optimize existing partnerships. 
  • Collaborate to drive, negotiate, and close new opportunities and expand established relationships
  • Analyse the infectious disease interventions development pipelines of biotech and pharma companies in order to guide short and long term pipeline strategy
  • Work with Baseimmune interdisciplinary teams (Pre-clinical development, Software) to support multidisciplinary vaccine development projects.
  • Understand emerging technologies and novel vaccine platforms.
  • Provide general intelligence on the global vaccine development market.
  • Participate in and where appropriate lead external meetings and calls with stakeholders.
  • Organize online webinars and support marketing activities 
  • Attend conferences
  • Brainstorm, develop, elaborate, prioritize, and sequence a roadmap of collaborative efforts between potential partners
  • Work with company R&D leadership to harmonize market priorities and company development priorities

  • MBA or PhD  required
  • 5+ years experience in business development
  • Results oriented, high energy and collaborative
  • Experience and comfort leading contract negotiations
  • Understanding of partnering operations and business models in both pharma and biotech markets
  • Understanding of the preclinical and translational drug development process
  • Problem-solving and data analysis skills
